This week at Handmade By 3 Little B’s, Mel seems to have “sparkles” all around her! Yes, it that time of year again, when she starts to weave crafty magic with he favourite fabric - sparkling denim. Anything made in this fabric is guaranteed to be soft and stretchy and absolutely perfect for layering with gorgeous tights and funky shoes. Already in store are some beautiful “Sparkling Sweet as Can Be” Dresses and also with Easter just around the corner, things seem to be just “hopping” off the machine in a creative flurry! Lil Pip is busy preparing for the next Maribrynong Makers Market Saturday 17 March, 9.30am - 3.30pm. Lots of these gorgeous little owl taggies (seen here at the beginning of their creation!) plus the new and very popular winter skirt with gorgeous pockets. La Crafts Easter launch starts Monday 27th 8PM on Facebook, all the embroidery designs will be available to be ordered and some extra special items will be available through the website www.lacrafts.com.au

Over at Ohana Trends the end of February is approaching and the Hearts for Hearts album is closing. If you are after a heart, where all proceeds go towards raising funds for HeartKids, don't miss out! Also, March is approaching and on the 1st of March at 9pm QLD time, the Easter Album is being posted. There will be OOAK boy and girl fabric orientated big bunnies, little bunnies, singlets and shirts with bunnies on them and a few other surprises. The majority of this album is full of limited numbers or a one and only in a specific fabric.

What’s your USP?

So I answered the question – what price (which was a bit of the cart before the horse but a common question nonetheless).

Next we looked at following our passion and discovering a niche.

Then came focusing on your benefits and not your features.

Now this next one, is honestly the hardest challenge of all. Something I deal with all the time and even doing marketing and advertising as long as I have, it isn’t something that comes easily. In fact, it should be easy. This is something you should consider carefully and make sure you have it completely right before moving forward.

Develop your Unique Selling Proposition (USP)

No a USP is not a type of gun (as I discovered when I googled for an image – yikes!)

Don’t worry about coming up with a catchy tag line or phrase, just concentrate on what makes you different from your competitors.

You need to explain how and why your products are better than others or your competitors. Perhaps you have designed them all yourself? Or you use all organic materials in the products? Do yours cost less than others (yes this is a USP!)?

Do you have any added extras? Special incentives to buyers (think a free hair accessory with an outfit)?

Whatever your unique selling proposition or unique selling point as it is commonly referred to, you need to clearly define it. You need to be able to answer the question at any time, “So what makes your product special?”. You will then have your response!

I would recommend writing something down and then come back to it a few days later. You might want to tweak it a little. Dwell on it even. Test it out on your family and friends. If at the end of the week, you are happy with your statement, then you have yourself a USP!

The Sewing Sisterhood is throwing down the gauntlet to our readers, fans and likers! We are going to run four TSS Challenges in 2012, where we set the theme and you are challenged to create something to share. The Sisters will be creating to the theme too!

The first theme is EASTER and you can make anything you like. It can be sewn or crafted, it can be baked or decorated. It can be digital craft or traditional craft. It can be a kids craft or activity! It can be anything CREATIVE you like, as long as it fits the them! Challenge yourself and try something new, or try out a new technique or material.

Sign up in the comments here or on our Facebook page. You have until Sunday 1st April to get your photos in to us to be counted as part of the Challenge. Post your photos on our Wall on FB or post them in the comments here, or email them to thesewingsisterhood@live.com.au and we will publish the best submissions here just before Easter.

My Obsession Designs and M's Cute Bottoms are going to market! Find Tracey and Michelle at the Mummy Tree Markets (Morningside) on Sunday 26th February from 9am - 1pm. Bring your family for a fun day out - there will be childrens entertainment, gourmet food and plenty of gorgeous products for you to browse. Market runs from 9am - 1pm at Colmslie Recreation Reserve, Col Gardner Drive, Morningside. My Obsession Designs will have lots of fun, funky, practical homewares available for sale including these fabric baskets - great for organisation around the home!

M's Cute Bottoms are off to market for the first time in 2012. Some lovely new prints in nappies and the launch of our new workhorse nappy. Our workhorse nappies are an AI2 available in both velcro and snap waists. They feature the new snap in booster system which will be interchangeable with all the other M's range. Head on over to The Mummy Tree Markets at Morningside on Sunday 26th and have a look at our range in person. Don't forget to stop by and say hello!

This week over at Skip Chasey we are having a Market Night. Please come and join us at 8pm (QLD time) on Thursday. There will be some lovely items for mums and for the little ones too. Also a few very rare custom order spots will be opened up!

Ok so now you are following your passion and you have found your niche , right?

Next you need to research, test and research some more. Talk to your friends, family or search online. Make sure when you release your product that you have it right. It is easier to find a product that people want, than to try to find a market for the product you have. Make sense?

Next you need to focus on the benefits of your product. You need to convince people that they really need it.

You shouldn’t be talking about the features of your product but rather ‘what’s in it for me?’

Say I’m looking for a new car. The salesman keeps banging on about the ABS brakes, airbags and things I don’t even understand. My eyes start glazing over. Doesn’t really mean anything to me. I’m not really into cars.

BUT if he starts talking to me about the safety aspects and how it will protect my children – now there is a benefit.

Can you start to incorporate 'benefit' language into your communication rather than features?

Lil Pip is off to the Yarraville Markets on Saturday 11 February. The same day as the Yarraville Festival it is set to be huge. Kids entertainment, food, bands and of course the craft market!

Hair today..... gone on 3rd March!

I will be stepping out of my comfort zone on Saturday 3rd March to raise money for the Cancer Council Queensland. My husband and are going to cut off our hair to support my Mum who has recently had radiation treatment and will be loosing hers.

I am also trying to find a way to sell my hair by way of a donation to a company that can use it for product testing or donate it to someone who can make wigs for cancer patients. If you know anyone who may be interested in this please drop me a line - my_obsession@optusnet.com.au

Up next in our Product in Focus series, we feature a 'hootiful' product which makes the perfect newborn baby gift! This Q&A session courtesy of Jane from Lil Pip.

Name of product: Boobook
What is the purpose of the product? A perfect present for newborns or babies, the Boobook owl ribbon taggy is designed to stimulate babies senses. The grosgrain, satin, velour or lace ribbons provide texture for little fingers and the beautiful soft minky back is just gorgeous to snuggle into. The wings have added crinkle to delight a curious baby! The long ribbon 'handle' can hang from your pram, hook onto rings in the car, bassinette .. many options.
Who can use this product? From newborn to the age of 2 years but they have been known to hang in sewing rooms and I had one customer who bought them as gifts but were quickly taken by her 7 and 5 year old girls!
What is the product made from? 100% cotton, ribbons of all types, minky or occasionally chenille back and crinkly wings are made from recycled plastic.
Where is the product created? In my sewing space at home in Melbourne (usually known as my bedroom!)
How is the product created? Oh this is the fun part - I love to play with all the beautiful fabrics and ribbons, designed just the right combination. They are all created by me and Maxine - my sewing machine!
How did the product idea come about? Owls were becoming very popular a couple of years ago and I had seen something online. I made a couple for friends with new babies and had so many comments about them so decided to refine the design and make them myself. Nearly 2 years later, I have made over 200 of them.

Anything else about the product you would like to mention? Each and every one of them has a name. To me they all have their own little characters. Bizarre? Yes I'm now becoming the crazy owl lady :)

Make sureyou keep an eye on the Or Elsie! Facebook page to be kept up to date with theevents of virtual launch party whichwill kick off at noon (NSW time) with random games and giveaways leading up tothe store going live.

There are afew things already previewing in the store front with more been added right up until opening.Mums are catered for with stock including ladies singlets and peg aprons, and thenthere are these cute little capri pants for the daughters.

Meanwhile with all the focus on Or Elsie! not much ishappening on the boys side of things. Fabric has been ordered to make prototypes for the winter range at PuppyDogs Tails and there are a few ideas in the sketchbook for Easter shirts. A clean up revealed a few unclaimed waterproofcar seat mats and these have been added to store – they are an easy on easy offdesign to help protect your car seat from accidents during toilet training,from wet bottoms after swimming or just from the general mess kids make.

With school now underway, here at Unique Babeez we are about to re-open for the year. First up you will find me at Little Feet Baby Market at Hillcrest on Sat 4th Feb as well as I will be beginning to restock the website pages with new designs for the year. Keep an eye out on our Facebook page as well to find out when you can catch a custom spot to get your very own personalised item of choice, these will be popping up in the near future.

Menu Monday

This week we have two recipes for you from Linda, one of our independent crafters - as seen in last weeks Sewing Sisterhood Photo Challenge.

Banana & White Choc Chip Muffins
(adapted from a Taste.com.au recipe)

Ingredients:

60g margarine
2 cups (300g) SR Flour
1/4 cup raw sugar
1/2 cup (125ml) skim milk
2 eggs
2 over-ripe bananas, mashed
1 cup (100 - 200g) Nestle white choc bits
Vanilla Essence
1 tsp cinnamon

Method: 1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees.
2. Line a muffin tray with patty cases, or alternatively spray lightly with oil cooking spray
3. Sift flour and cinnamon into a bowl, add the sugar and mix well. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients.
4. Add all the wet ingredients including the mashed banana. Mix until JUST combined.
5. Fold through choc bits.
6. Distribute mixture between 12 muffins, bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Lentil Salad
(Apparently from a Jenny Craig cookbook, featured in OK Magazine Australia)

Ingredients:

1 cup dried brown lentils
1 punnet cherry tomatoes
Olive Oil spray
2 tsp olive oil
2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
1 x 450gm can baby beets, drained and sliced
100gm rocket leaves
1/4 cup parsley and 1/4 cup mint, both roughly chopped (reserve a few leaves to garnish)
1 brown shallot, diced
50gm reduced fat feta, crumbled
2 tbsp toasted walnuts

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees
2. Place the lentils in a saucepan, cover with water and bring to the boil, then cook for 20 minutes or until tender. Drain well and set aside.
3. Meanwhile, place the cherry tomatoes on a baking tray, spray with spray oil, season with cracked pepper and roast for 10 minutes until the skin is just starting to split.
4. Whisk the olive oil and balsamic vinegar together in a small bowl to combine.
5. To serve, place the lentils and the remaining ingredients together in a large bowl, toss through the dressing and divide into four plates. Top with roasted tomatoes and garnish.

Time Saver: Can substitute cooking your own lentils with two x 400g cans of brown lentils.

Follow your passion and find your niche

Starting your own business and making money or even a living is going to take some time (blood, sweat and most likely tears!). That’s why you see everywhere, people telling you to follow your passion. Do what you love, after all you are going to be doing it a while, spending a lot of time and money investing in making it a success, so you want to make sure it is something you really enjoy doing.

It might be worth making a mood board (Pinterest is amazing for this!). Keep adding things that inspire you and check back regularly to make sure you are on track.

So once you have found your passion, you now need to find the people who want what you make! Sometimes it is easier to find your niche, something that is unique to you or a new take on something (I honestly believe nothing is new in the hand crafted world!) and market to a smaller group of people who really want it rather than try to be all things to all people.

Over at Ohana Trends we are getting ready for the month of February and we are going to give Cupid a helping hand. There is an entire folder dedicated to Valentine's Day entitled: Valentine's Day 2012: Heart for Hearts. There are a multitude of hearts in this folder for sale, $5 plus postage. The best part is, ALL of the proceeds from this sale are being donated to a very worthy cause and one that is important to me, HeartKids. This money will go towards researching congenital heart disease, and helping out families and babies/children born with a congenital heart defect.

For Easter, there are going to be limited numbers of bunnies for sale. Ones for bigger girls and boys and ones for babies too :o) Keep an eye out for these coming up :o)

Crambster Creations are having their first market night of the year on Tuesday 24th Jan @8pm Qld time. We are excited here at HQ to get back into the swing of things after a lovely break with family. We are lucky to also be stocking the awesome zipper flowers so come and grab a couple. Also check out our Hair Accessories Albums on Facebook which are available all the time.

Holly isbusy sewing up a storm for the launch of the Or Elsie! virtual storefront next Tuesday night (Jan 31^st). Mark the date in your diaries as there will be a bit of a partyhappening on the Facebook page that evening in the lead up to the store goinglive at 8:30 pm NSW time.

Probably the most common question we see in our group is, ‘What should I charge for this?’

This is a really interesting question and has so many factors to influence the answer. Here are some points to consider:

What is the cost of your materials? Ok an obvious one to consider. What is the cost of your fabric, buttons, threads, glue, hair clips, toy fill, embroidery thread and all the items that go into making up your product. What about your electricity, machine wear and tear and those type of overheads? Website costs, packaging, petrol to get to the post office. It all adds up. Have you ever sat down and really figured out the true cost of your product/s?

What is the cost of your time? I think if all home crafters factored in the true cost of their time, they wouldn’t sell a thing! I guess what I mean by this question, is don’t just cover your costs and add $1 on top. Some go by the rule of double the cost of your materials, some triple. Just make sure that what you add on top of the cost of your materials makes it worth your while.

What are the prices of comparable products? As a general rule, I don’t think you should just charge the same as everyone else does. Not everyone creates in the same way or style. You may use more expensive vintage fabrics and so need to charge a little more to make money. However, doing some research and having a look at what others are charging, might give you an idea of what range you should price your product.

What value do you place on your own work? I think we are the biggest self doubters. We don’t think our products are amazing and often wonder if others would even buy them. Having recently done my first markets, it truly is a thrill when people admire your creations and ask ‘wow, did you really make this?’ (said with a note of awe in their voice). If you price your products cheaply, how does this reflect your brand? Cheap prices to me are cheap quality products. Plus if you price your products cheaply, you simply cannot sustain this and expect to make money. Right?

What do you want to charge? If you spend hours creating a custom designed quilt then you should charge accordingly. What you charge will reflect on your brand. Don’t be afraid to charge what you want. Ok you might loose some people who want a bargain, but in the long run, you will gain customers who appreciate your work.

Welcome to week 2 of The Sewing Sisterhood Photo Challenge. This week we are looking at the Sister's favourite spaces in their homes.

1. Angela - Perigren Creations: My favourite room of the house-the hammock on deck centres my soul - how could it not looking at the expanse of sky through the trees.

2. Mel - Handmade by 3 Little B's: My favourite space is currently the view from my lounge-room window. A garden that is alive in full summer bloom. I keep finding myself staring at it and feeling a wave of soothing calm wash over me. It is a good place for my soul right now.

3. Leigh - Sakurako: My favourite room in our house is the boys bedroom. I love the bunting flags on the walls and drawers, and their wooden names which I painted myself. Henry's gorgeous cot quilt was made by his godmother. Oliver has a quilt for his bed too but its still awaiting the binding (*blushes*).

1. Jo - 5 Giraffes & a Cheeky Monkey: My favourite room in the house... The Kid's room.... I never thought I would have ONE child let alone TWO.

2. Tracey - My Obsession Designs: My bed is not actually my most favourite place - I actually don't sleep much at all - but I love what's on my bed and hanging over my bed. Quilt made by my Mum in Browns, Pinks and Greens- Wall Hanging handstitched by me.

3. Tanya - Pumpkin Snitch Designs: This is our favorite spot. 'Cause it's our cuddles and books spot. ;)

1. Michelle - M's Cute Bottoms: My favourite place, the kids playground it's brilliant kids can go out and play till there hearts content, gets them out of the house!

2. Naomi - Ohana Trends: This is my favourite place in my home. My lounge room and my antique lounge. I get to play with my kids and watch them play from this lounge. Lots of happy times. Also love to read on this lounge too.

3. Melanie - MelliMoo Creations: This is my favourite place its kind of the hub of the house and I always seem to be in it.

1. Belinda - Little Sew & Sews: A place to chill with a good book, a comfy cushion and some Margaret River chocolate close by.

2. Tina - The Sewing Fairy: My favourite room is our bedroom, you can’t see it but we often sleep with the blinds open as there is a hill behind the house & we often spot kangaroos bounding about on there. We have a king-sized bed so there is plenty of room for the 4 of us to jump in & have a family chat/cuddle on weekends

3. Gill - Frilly's Designs: This is my favourite space at the moment, BBQ for Christmas and outdoor area just set up. Loving this space!

1. Jane - Lil Pip: I tried to think of somewhere else but nope, my bed. The huge print above is from when Amelia was 6 days old. She is laying on top of Oliver fast asleep. I still stop and look at this amazing moment in time. Makes me emotional. Just love it.

2. Sharon - Lil Moo & Mee: This is my favorite part of the house. It's a wall in our open living area where we put Maxx's art work from playgroup or early intervention. It's a reminder every day how far he's come.

3. Holly - Or Elsie: Here is my "fav place" - its my hallway. Simply because it doesn't matter how chaotic the rest of my house it is nearly always clean and even when the toys take over its a quick job to regain the calm.

Product in Focus: Walkie Chalkie from Skip Chasey

Today's Product in Focus is something clever to put the smiles on faces of children and parents alike! This Q&A session is courtesy of Sarah from Skip Chasey.

Name of product: Walkie Chalkie
What is the purpose of the product: To provide a portable drawing mat while out and about.
Who can use this product? Children that are able to draw with chalk - all the way up to adults. It is also good for those children that are non-verbal and can write or draw their responses.
What is the product made from? Chalk cloth fabric and designer cotton backs.
Where is the product created? It is created here at Skip Chasey headquarters.
How is the product created? With a sewing machine. The binding on the Walkie Chalkies is all made by hand. Specialty needles are used to go through the thick chalkcloth.
How did the product idea come about? I saw some chalkcloth being sold online and thought about what I could be doing with it. There was a prototype that was posted on the Skip Chasey Facebook page that was very well received.

The joy on their faces when mummy makes something for themis totally worth it (and something that should happen more often!). Still being challenged, this is the firsttime playing with stretch knit fabric since high school. Supposed to be night wear, I have a feelingthat they might be all the time wear!

I'll soon be preparing for my first markets for 2012. KeepSaturday 11 February free and come to see me at the Yarraville Markets. Sameday as the Yarraville Festival with bands, free kids entertainment, food and ofcourse homemade goodies.

M's Cute Bottoms has enjoyed some time off and is gettingback into the swing of things. I've been busy updating all the products on thewebsite and everything is current. Product in Focus: Kids Back Pack from My Obsession Designs

Let's kick start 2012 with a product that fits nicely with the beautiful summer weather that a lot of Australia is currently experiencing! This Q&A session is courtesy of Tracey from My Obsession Designs.

Name of product: Kids Back Pack
What is the purpose of the product: My kids back packs are lined with a waterproof fabric, which makes it ideal for kids to carry to swimming lessons or a trip to the beach. Equally as great for a trip to the park or an overnight stay at the Grandparent's place.
Who can use this product? The back pack is designed "kids-size" but can easily be used by an adult also.
What is the product made from? The outside of the bag is made from 100% quilting cotton - lightweight by durable. They are lined with waterproof PUL (which is the same product used in MCN's to keep baby dry).
Where is the product created? The back packs are created by me, in my home with my kids playing under my feet.
How is the product created? They are sewn entirely with my trusty sewing machine.
How did the product idea come about? My children attend swimming lessons weekly. With all three of them in the pool (as well as me for the younger ones), I was a bit like a pack-horse heading out every Wednesday morning. I wanted a back pack that the kids would wear themselves, something fun and colourful, lightweight but big enough to hold their towel, swimwear, drink bottle and a snack. Something that didn't weigh them down.
Where can customers buy this product and what is the RRP? TSS Photo Challenge - Week 1

Welcome to The Sewing Sisterhood's weekly Wednesday Photo Challenge. Photo challenges are really popular online right now - there are weekly challenges for the less adventurous, photo-a-day challenges for a single month for those who want to stretch themselves a bit, and Project 365(+1) for those dedicated to taking a photo a day for a whole year.

Monday. Today is the day that many hubby's go back to work (do I hear a collective hurrah from some of you?). If you are like me, it's been wonderful having them around, but I yearn to get some order back into my day! With only five weeks to go until the first market of 2012, I am very busy playing with fabrics and new patterns here at Zahley Rose. I think what I am most excited about right now is the new teether taggie. After being repeatedly asked for mini taggies at markets I think I've finally come up with something that every baby will love. Even Miss 3 has given her approval by attempting to steal them from the sewing room.

There is a hive of activity over at My Obsession Designs. Back to school items are piling up ready for the next online market later this month. Happy New Year!

The sisters have had a little time off over Christmas and New Year. We have revitalised our souls and are ready to hop back to it!

The year is racing away already - many of us will be seeing our babies (some our first ones, some our last) off to school for the first time in a couple of weeks (eek!).

This year we have big things planned for our humble little blog.

The Sisters go to Market

The sun is scorching the grass to start another week up here in sunny Queensland. I hope you are enjoying your summer weather where ever you are around this beautiful country.

The sisters of The Sewing Sisterhood are going to be busy this week. Many of us are attending markets all around the country - a great opportunity to get out for the morning with (or without) you family.

Appleseed will be having a "First Day of Christmas" sale to celebrate the opening of their new website on Thursday 1st December at 8.30pm (AEDT)

Crambster Creations will be at the NQ Babies and Kids Market on 3rd December at Iggy Park Hall. Market runs from 9am - 1pm. Sabrina will have lots of last minute Christmas gift ideas with the convience of EFTPOS.

Little Sew & Sews will be at Chatterbox Markets on Sunday the 4th of December at Altone Recreation Centre, Beechboro 10am - 2pm. Lots of gorgeous creations will be available, including these two mermaids and some new release products!! If you are a Perth fan reading this blog post and are intending to head to Chatterbox Markets, make sure you email Belinda by 5pm Friday 2/12/11 to put your name down to get a special 50% off one product voucher only valid for use at Chatterbox Markets on the day.

You will be able to catch up with many of the sisters at The Huckleberry Market on Sunday 4th December at 11 Civic Square, Croydon. Martha in South Australia

I arrived in SA to some terrible weather. Storms and wind that just about swept me off my feet. My first visit was to Amanda from La Crafts. Amanda normally makes gorgeous childrens clothing and other accessories (including breast feeding covers for Mummys and car seat wraps for babies). She is so clever. I was really looking forward to having a bit of a shop, but there was no time for that!

La Crafts headquarters had transformed from sewing central to irrigation central! There were lots of big pipes and big holes all around. A new irrigation system was being installed. And there was mud, lots of mud because of all the rain! I was not about to get my pretty little self dirty (I need to be nice and clean for whoever becomes my owner very soon), so I nominated myself as site supervisor.

I also got to have a go on the old tractor - that was pretty cool, and had a lovely walk in the vineyard on the La Crafts property.

Once the work was done I had some lovely play time with Amanda's daughter Sophie. We had lots of cuddles, played on the swing and jumped on the trampoline. I love playing with all the kids when I visit all these places!

When it was time to be packed up to be sent on to my next destination, Miss Sophie was ever so upset. I gave her a big hug and then I was on my way again. My next stop is Zahley Rose HQ where i will be spending some time with the lovely Jodie and her family.

A week at The Sewing Sisterhood

The Sewing Sisters

A visit to Wagga & Sydney

I arrived in Wagga Wagga for a few days of well-earned R & R before we headed for the Harbor City. The weather while I was in Wagga was a bit iffy so I spent most of my time relaxing in Miss E’s cot and even thought I was desperate for a photo with the “Welcome to Wagga Wagga” sign the rain certainly put a dampener on that idea. I really should have a raincoat….

Luckily the sun was shining for our weekend in Sydney and it was a beautiful which we got to enjoy on a ferry ride across the harbor on our way to the zoo. (Here I am sailing past the Opera House)

The Zoo was amazing with so many different animals to see. We took lots of photos but Master 4 decided to play with the camera and delete most of them. Luckily he didn’t delete all of them so here is one of me with the pretty amazing view of the city back across the water…

We had a great day exploring before catching the ferry back across to the city and then we topped it off with a ride on the mono rail back to our hotel.

We had also planned a trip to Martin Place to visit Weekend Sunrise but there was a protest going on just outside so we played it safe and stayed away.

Driving home was a bit of an adventure are we got lost getting out of the city and drove in circles for a while – we could see the highway we just couldn’t get on it!

Luckily we worked it and made it back to Wagga where I was hugged tight before being packed back away and sent onwards on my journey!

From North to South

After visting Far North Queensland, it was time to head south again. My next stop was Stoked Creations HQ in Lilydale, Vic - right of the edge of the beautiful Yarra Valley. As I emerged from my travel bag I could hear excitement everywhere - my arrival had been eagerly anticipated! The Stoked Creations crew loved my handbag (that I picked up from My Obsession Designs) and my cute new undies from Unique Babeez.

A 4WD adventure trip into the beautiful bush of the Yarra Vally had been planned for me during my stay. Unfortunately the little kidlets got sick and we had to cancel - such a pity because I was REALLY looking forward to that! I also missed out on visiting the wineries, day spas and a tour of the gorgeous Yarra Valley, as shortly after I arrived, the Stoked Creations crew were off the the beach - Dromana to be precise!

With some beautiful weather, we decided to make our first stop a skate park. Lynda was pretty impressed with the moves I pulled on my bike! I had forgotten my helmet, so instead of sticking around the skate park we decided to move to a slower pace and take a quick trip to Portsea. In the picture below I am looking at the view of Portsea Pier. In the background, in the very distance, you can see the Queenscliff-Sorrento ferry.

On our way back to the car we said good morning to a very prominent Australian Labour Party Minister out for a walk with his wife and daughter. We then headed to Sorrento for a quick cappuccino - just what I needed!

We also squeezed in some swimming at the beach, sand castles before the weather turned and it rained and rained and rained!! No problems though we still had a great time ... thanks to Lynda and her family for entertaining me for a couple of days in the Yarra Valley.

The Week Ahead

And another week begins.... again.... Christmas is getting closer and closer and I am still not organised. How about you?

We have lots of things happening in our corner of the world at the moment:

La Crafts is holding a market night on their facebook page from 8pm (SA Time) on Tuesday 15th. Beautiful handcrafted clothes for your little princes and princesses.

On Tuesday 15th at 5.30pm (WA Time)The Sewing Fairy is holding a market night. Handcrafted kids toys, clothing and accessories will be available.

There will be loads of gorgeous MCN's available at Baby Chilli on Wednesday 16th at 8pm (AEDT). There will be new limited edition nappies aplenty in both boy and girl varities.

Also at 8pm on Wednesday, Made for Myah will be holding a market night. Softies, crocheted goodies - you really need to stop by and have a look!

On Sunday 20th Silly Duffas and Zahley Rose will be attending the Lollipop Markets in Adelaide.

After visiting with Unique Babeez and M's Cute Bottoms I went to spend the night with Tracey from My Obsession Designs. It was SO much fun!! She had 4 kiddies for me to play with!

Masters X & R let me play with their Thomas the Tank Engine trains which was heaps of fun. Master R really enjoyed having me over for the night and gave me lots of really big cuddles.

Miss A (who is only 20mths old) ADORED me! (and I thought she was great fun too!). Their little baby was really tiny! (He is only a month old). While I had a wonderful time playing with the kids, Tracey made me a handbag of my very own (do you like it?).

It really was just a fleeting visit. After staying for just one night, it was time for a trip up to Townsville to meet Sabrina from Crambster Creations.Until next time!Martha

Martha goes North!

After a special flight (via Australia Post) I landed in Townsville - the capital of North Queensland. It was oh so warm!! When I arrived at Crambster Creations the warm open arms of Sabrina's daughter Adria greeted me! She gave me the grand tour of Crambster HQ.

Adria invited me to her 1st Birthday Party - what fun that was! Adria let me help her open her presents before the party began. The following day it was time to do a bit of sightseeing in beautiful Townsville.

First stop was ‘Riverway’ where I toured the art gallery and watched people enjoy the pools and finished the visit relaxing by Ross River taking in the view of some gorgeous river front houses.

Next we headed to cool off by the Strand, having some ice cream we walked along the Strand before stopping on the beach to take in the sights of Magnetic Island.

I was having such a great time - I wanted to see more, so Sabrina took me up Castle Hill, where I was able to see Townsville from all advantage points. I took a few ‘tourist’ piccies and had a chat with a few locals who were most interested in my journey so far around Australia.

Unfortunately due to my tight timeline that was all I had time for in the tropics. It was sad to have to leave the warmer weather of Far North Queensland. I enjoyed my stay with Sabrina and her family, and made some great friends too! But alas, it's time to travel on down to Victoria for my next stop.

We will chat again soon.

My Obsession will be re-opening their Oz Handmade store on Monday night from 8pm. There will be 10% off all purchases for 2 hours only to celebrate reaching 1000 likers on their facebook page.

It's the start of a new week. Did you know there is only 7 weeks until Christmas!! Are you prepared or will you be running around sorting out last minute gifts in the week leading up? I hope to be organised, but one can never tell what is going to happen around this house :o)

There are lots of sales and markets coming up to help you get yourself sorted, without the hassle of last minute shopping.

The Breast Cancer Auction at LA Crafts is finishing tonight at 8pm (ACDT). There are many beautiful items up for Auction. Please head over and bid generously.

Oz Handmade is going to have a Trivia Night on their blog on Tuesday 1st November. There will be prizes - Gift Vouchers for 1st, 2nd and 3rd to spend in any Oz Handmade Store. Fun starts from 9pm (AEDT)

Little Sew & Sews is heading to Market on Sunday 6th November. If you are in or around Perth, stop in and visit Belinda at Treasure Hunt Market Place, Craigie Leisure Centre, Whitfords Avenue from 9am - 1pm.

Custom orders are filling quickly at My Obsession Designs. No more custom orders- Custom orders for Christmas delivery will close on 7th November. Any custom orders received after this date will be delivered in January 2012.

Puppy Dogs Tails is currently taking orders for these cute Christmas Shorts. Be quick because there are selling fast and no more Christmas fabric will be ordered for this season.

Meet the Maker - Baby Chilli

Tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Rebecca (Bec) and im the mother of two children, Alexander and Isabella. I am kept very busy with them but also wanted to do something from home to keep me creative so Baby Chilli modern cloth napies was born. This year I have started The Chilli Tree as well to delve into other creative items .

Other than sewing, what do you do?

Mother and I am also a Personal Assistant to a company that help look after people with mental disabilities, its very rewarding

Where do you get your inspiration?

I love fabric and so when in a fabric shop I envisage what I can make with all the beautiful fabrics. I also lay awake at night dreaming of new creations J

What does sewing, crafting and handmade mean to you?

My mum taught me how to sew and everyday we swap ideas and learn from each other. Its what fills up that little bit left of me.

Who is your favourite fabric or pattern designer?

I love Michael miller, Alexander Henry, Amy butler and Robert Kaufman.

Who has been your greatest influence?

My mum and still continues to be so. My mother in law is also a huge influence too.

Where would you like to be in five years?

I would love to quit my part time job and cloth as many baby bottoms in Baby Chillis and also keep all mothers clean with a Chilli Tree apron. I want to be known for something, to be the creator of something amazing, some one people strive to be and give others inspiration and dreams.

What handmade possession do you love most?

My mum gave me an advent calendar for Christmas, she worked really hard on it and I can't wait to hang it up next Christmas.

Along Came Martha

With help from Miss Bella, I emerge into the chaos that is Unique Babeez Headquarters.

Bella is very excited at the size of me

and quickly whisks me away for a well deserved rest! With all my travelling across the country I really did need a boost of energy! I had a nice nap with all the other dollies in Miss Bella's bed. Miss B even let me have prime position on her pillow while she slept on a cushion (such hospitality).

After my rest, all recharged I decided to investigate Unique Babeez Headquarters a little more .... and this is what I found...

UNDIES!! Oh, how I wanted a pair of my very own! So Patricia let me dive into the Great Wall of Fabric to choose my favourite design.

While my very special pair of Undies were being made I toured the rest of the house with Miss B. It was then a mad dash to Kindy to pick up Master Lachy. Reluctantly, I said goodbye to Miss B, Master L and of course Patricia to continue my travels. My next stop will be M's Cute Bottoms.

More than just a Facebook Group

We are a group of women, who for the most part rely on Facebook for all our interaction.

We were started by 4 ladies who wanted a place for like minded crafty women to share their passion, but it has become so much more....
Some of us have been invited into the group by people we know "in real life", others have been invited by someone they have met online through the selling and purchasing (and supporting) of homemade wares.

We all started out with one thing in common, but soon found we have much, much more.....

We have shared the joys of pregnancies (and there have been many - beware of the TSS fairy dust!) and the heartbreak of not being able to fall pregnant and the devastation (and celebration) of the birth of a precious Angel Baby. Some of us have had health issues and we all have vented about the frustrations in our lives. And, as any real sister would, we all listen.... we offer each other advise and lend a "listening ear". We discovered that many Angel Babies are watching over us, that several of our sisters have had to endure numerous miscarriages and rounds of IVF to finally fall pregnant with their beautiful children. We discovered that someone else has been through that terrifying health scare or have husbands and children that sometimes simply DRIVE US CRAZY!!

Some of us, since the group began have traveled across the country to meet up at Craft Shows and Retreats and also to honour our precious Angel "Nephew" - remember that many of us had not previously known each other "in real life".

We are forever SISTERS and although we sometimes have differences of opinions we are always there for each other. There is always a listening ear, a comforting word - and let's not forget the original reason The Sewing Sisterhood started - we share our creations and inspire each other to try new things and encourage each other when we doubt ourselves. It is even possible that we lead each other astray in regards to the purchase of fabrics or patterns or other crafting essentials (did someone mention a sale???)

So yes, we are a Facebook Group, but we are much much more....

Martha hits the Gold Coast!

Martha arrived at the beautiful Gold Coast to some interesting weather! Torrential rain and gale force wind meant Martha wasn't able to get out and about to explore this usually sunny city. After a lot of travelling though, Martha was quite happy to unwind and spend some quiet time with Bernie from Tea for Evie and little Miss Evie herself. 17 month old Evie took great delight in showing Martha around their home, introducing her to the cat, and taking her for a ride out on the deck on her trike!

After the initial settling in, Martha enjoyed spending some time in Tea for Evie HQ, and helped select vintage fabrics for the new collection.

Crafting is not without it's dangers though, as Martha found out when she went to rummage through a big suitcase filled to the brim with upcycled doilies!

Martha recovered with some new friends, the Tea for Evie ragdolls, and relaxed over cups of tea. They used the special vintage teacups for the occasion and had a very ladylike indoor picnic!

It's safe to say Martha is quite the seasoned traveller by now, and I think she is already daydreaming of big overseas adventures. I found her brushing up on her French, and planning some fabulous destinations. This is a girl after my own heart, oui!

Martha had a lovely time with us and is well rested for her next round of adventures! We gave her a big hug goodbye and sent her to our friend Patricia at Unique Babeez. We can't wait to see what she gets up to next!

Tea for Evie

Cupcakes are a favourite in our home - and it seems they are in the home of Little Sew & Sews too!!

Here is Bel's "Never Fail Cupcake Recipe" (Bel likes to use muffin cases to make BIG ones and folds in things like Choc Chips, Sultanas or Cherries)

Ingredients

2 cups Self Raising flour, sifted

3/4 cup caster sugar

3/4 cup milk

125g butter, melted and cooled

2 x 59g eggs, beaten

1 teaspoon Vanilla essence

Method

Preheat oven to 200 deg celsius. Grease or line with cases a 12 capacity muffin pan. Combine flour and caster sugar in a bowl. Make a well in the centre.
Add milk, butter, eggs and vanilla to flour mixture. Using a large metal spoon, stir gently to combine. If adding extras, stir them through once the mix is combined.
Spoon mixture evenly among the 12 muffin cases. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean when inserted. Stand in the pan for 5 minutes before cooling on a wire rack.

Decorate when cooled as desired with frosting or icing.

Menu Monday

This weeks recipe comes from the home of Bel of Little Sew & Sews (and who doesn't love a good cheesecake!)

No-bake Cheesecake

Serves: 8

Prep time: 20mins

Chill time: 10-15mins then overnight

INGREDIENTS:

250g plain sweet biscuits (I have used Nice and granita and both were yummo)

125g butter, melted

375g cream cheese, softened

zest of 1 lemon

2 tsp vanilla essence

1/3 cup lemon juice

400g can condensed milk

optional - strawberries and icing sugar to decorate

METHOD:

Grease and line a 20cm spring form tin
Place biscuits in food processor and finely crush. Add butter and process until mixed.
Press half of the mix into the base of the tine, and press remainder around the sides, using a glass to firm it into place.
Refrigerate for 10-15mins
Beat cream cheese until smooth and creamy. Add lemon rind and vanilla and beat. Add the condensed milk and lemon juice gradually, and beat until smooth and the volume has increased.
Pour into the tin and refrigerate overnight.
Decorate with strawberries and icing sugar, if desired

Martha Tours Mooloolaba

Martha made her way from Gympie with Angela from Perigren Creations to Mooloolaba where she had a VERY busy day with Me Sarah from Skip Chasey and little Miss 4.

Martha's first stop was at UnderWater World. She was so excited checking out the Stingrays and all the pretty coral and sea animals in the touch tank. She posed for a few photos with the local wildlife.

Next she wanted to check out the beach and take in some beautiful winter sunshine. Lazing on the beach with Miss 4 and meeting some of the lifeguards on duty, keeping all the swimmers safe.

After soaking up the sunshine she went off to pay her respects to Steve Irwin- at a special statue near the beach and at the Australia Zoo On the Beach Shop. She got to hang out with Bindi Irwin too (well a soft toy) and rode a Whale

Martha had a lovely time here in Mooloolaba checking out the sites and enjoying a lovely winters day. She left us at the post office for her next journey out to Murgon with the lovely Naomi and Family.

After the fun in Melbourne with The Sewing Sisterhood gals - Martha headed to Queensland with Angela (Perigren Creations) and Sarah (Skip Chasey).

Martha was a very safety conscious plane

traveler - wearing her seatbelt and reading the In Flight Safety Guide.

Upon landing, Martha was invited to visit the pilots - she was absolutely fascinated with all the lights and dials.

Sadly, she wasn't able to stay on board to help the pilots fly off to their next destination.

Welcome to Queensland - Martha with Sarah from Skip Chasey!!

First stop on her adventure is "The Town that Saved Queensland"

Her new friends were very excited to see her when school finished and couldn't wait to show her around town. Luckily there was a spare seat in our car, perfectly Martha size.

First Stop: The Valley Rattler - all aboard the Heritage Train for a scenic tour of the area

Then it was time to explore the many historical sites around Gympie

Town Hall Memorial Park Australian Institute of Country music

After touring around town it was back to Perigren Creations headquarters, to catch up with all Martha's new friends, including Rabbit and Bear. What better way to end the day, than tea, cookies and pizza on the deck overlooking the paddocks and breathing in that fabulous country air and sunshine.

Martha hit's the Melbourne Craft & Quilt fair with her sisters!

After an early start
well early for someone that does not have young children to wake her up

on a Saturday morning.

Before we hit the fair we had to go in search of COFFEE!!

Or I would not survive!

Those of us that had stayed in the apartment on the Friday night

were to meet up with some of the sisters
(our online crafting support group)
and spend the day with "Martha" our dolly and
attend the Craft & Quilt Fair.

Here we are what a stunning bunch!

When we got inside the fair some of us split up and went in different directions because we wanted to do some classes and demonstrations.
I went and did a procion dye class with unique stitching and hand dyed a silk scarf.

It was great to learn something new from the professionals :)

Another great class was one on what do do with the scraps you have in your craft room

Jane and Angela went off to a crochet class and Angela picked up her first crochet hook

It was then time for Martha to meet some of her friends.

Everyone loved meeting Martha we were stopped by lots of people who wanted to know about her and why she was travelling Australia.

By this stage we were all pretty exhausted we had a fantastic day at the Craft and Quilt fair in Melbourne but it was time to go back to the apartment and relax a little before dinner.

Welcome to Melbourne, Martha!

Martha's journey continues ....

Martha, Jane (Lil Pip) and the little owlets

I was up bright and early on the Saturday morning in the Lil Pip house and off we went to the Queen Victoria markets where they go every week. Aren't they lucky! Thankfully it wasn't too cold that morning, sometimes they go when it is just 3 degrees! I think I would prefer to stay snuggled up in bed.

Little Miss A (who is just 2) gave me lots of cuddles in the market trolley. What a great way to get around the markets.

First we went to the meat hall. There were so many people and so much to choose from. Meat, seafood and chicken.

I loved the deli hall the best - all the cheese, ham, dips, antipasto - yum!! This was my favourite shop, we bought ham and bacon here.
Next was off to buy fruit and vegetables. All the yummy healthy food.

It was still so early but the day was just getting started.

Off we went to the Melbourne Craft and Quilt Expo with lots of girls from The Sewing Sisterhood.

I enjoyed my morning at the Queen Victoria markets with Jane from Lil Pip and her little owlets. Thank you for showing me such an amazing place!

"Dolly" says Goodbye Perth and Hello Melbourne!

After a whirlwind tour of Northampton, WA - "Dolly" arrived back to Perth and had a few days to rest up in her new travelling/sleeping bag before starting the next stage of her journey!

Surviving the Midnight Horror flight from Perth, "Dolly" travelled out to Rathdowne Fabrics & Remnants bright and early by tram and got to meet the gorgeous Amanda from Appleberry Kids too!

"Dolly" spent her final hours with me trying very hard to nap and getting excited about all the fun that was coming up with Gill from Frilly's Designs, Jane from Lil Pip and many other crafty ladies!

Menu Monday

Here is a nice simple recipe for lunch or a light evening meal. Quick and easy to put together (just the way I like it!)

Spinach & Bacon Slice

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon oil

1 large onion, finely chopped

1 clove garlic, crushed

3 rashers bacon, diced

1 bunch English spinach or 6 large silverbeet leaves, washed and shredded

2 tablespoons self-raising flour

6 x 60g eggs

½ cup milk

1 cup grated tasty cheese

2 tomatoes, sliced

Method:

Heat oil in large fry pan. Add onion, garlic and bacon and stir over heat until onion is softened and bacon in just crisp. Add spinach to pan. Stir over heat until spinach is soft and most of the liquid has evaporated. Transfer spinach mixture to a large bowl to cool slightly. Stir in flour, then add eggs and milk. Stir until combined. Stir in cheese.
Pour the mixture into a greased rectangular (5-cup capacity) ovenproof dish. Arrange tomato slices on top of mixture. Bake at 180^oC for about 45 minutes until slice is set and lightly browned.

Stand in dish for 5 minutes before cutting into squares. Serve warm with salad and crusty bread if desired.

Variation:

Complete step 1, but instead of adding milk and eggs add some cream and the cheese and stir through some cooked pasta until heated through. Makes a very yummy pasta sauce!

Meet the Maker - Little Sew & Sews

This week we are getting to know Belinda Henderson from Little Sew & Sews

Tell us a little about yourself:

I am a lady of many previous careers (travel agent, croupier, teacher to name a few!) that is tackling the biggest one of my life "stay at home mum" to William, 7 and Thomas, 2. I recently married a wonderful man I am pleased to call my best friend too. I have two elderly cats, George and Dax that are my fur-babies :) I love creating, and am loving setting up Little Sew & Sews as a business. I am also a bit of a closet clown - I love being cheeky and witty and making people smile ;)

Other than sewing, what do you do?

Other than running around after Tornado Thomas I enjoy a good book, a great movie and learning. Learning is something I need to constantly keep doing :)

Where do you get your inspiration?

From all the gorgeous patterns for softies that are available and all the delicious fabric I buy! My original designs come from middle of the night wake up sessions, so my sub-conscious is obviously pretty creative too!

What does sewing, crafting and handmade mean to you?

Sewing is relaxation and pleasure at creating something that will be loved. Handmade means made with love, care and thought, each handmade creation is a work of art with the flaws (big or small) making it just perfect!

Who is your favourite fabric or pattern designer?

Oh, do I have to choose just one of each? Seriously, I couldn't narrow it down! I absolutely love almost all the fabric that comes out of Michael Miller and Riley Blake Designs, but my personal all-time face fabric is Blush by Basic Grey for Moda :) Pattern Designers - well I have serious creative envy of the talents that are Sarah Hanson from Dolls & Daydreams and Melanie Hurlston from Melly & Me

Who has been your greatest influence?

My family and friends. I surround myself with people that are all unique, they know how to have fun and never take themselves too seriously. This life is way too short to not have fun along the way.

Where would you like to be in five years?

Still having fun creating, designing and raising my boys. Hopefully all from a larger house that I come home to from a days work in my brick and mortar store full of handmade goodies!

What handmade possession do you love most?

Hard again to choose just one! My Winnie & Clem hat collection is always a pleasure to wear, as is my gorgeous headband from Skip Chasey.

For this weeks recipe, I am going to fall back on my heritage...

I am first generation (born) Australian. My Mum is a Kiwi and my Dad is from America (although he grew up in Australia from the age of 10). My Grandmother (Dad's Mum) brought with her lots of recipes that are traditional in the USA. One of my favourites growing up was her Homemade Apple Pie.

I remember as a child going to a Church Pot Luck Dinner and was so excited when I saw an Apple Pie on the table - that was definately MY dessert!!! What shock and disappointment I felt as I took a mouthful of this Apple Pie - I spat it out in disgust and promptly stated "I don't like this "Australian" Apple Pie (ie: one without the delicious flavours of cinnamon and nutmeg). I laugh now, thinking how embarrassed my Grandma must have been! I guess I assumed that EVERYONE had experienced such bliss as my Grandma's Apple Pie.

My Grandma is not so well these days, and finds it hard to stand in the kitchen for long periods of time, so the task of baking pies has fallen into my hands. I hope that one day my Grandchildren will love my pies as much as I love my Grandma's! (although I am still perfecting the scrumptious shortcrust pastry she used to make).

So here it is for you all to try - and I hope you love it as much as I do!

Apple Pie

Ingredients:

Crust:

2 cups flour

1 teaspoon salt

2/3 cup margarine

5 tablespoons water

** If you don't want to have a go at your own crust, just use the frozen shortcrust pastry from the frozen food section**

Filling:

6-8 apples

½ cup sugar

¼ cup flour

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon nutmeg

Dot of margarine

Method:

Crust:

Rub margarine into combined flour and salt until mixture is crumbly.
Add water, mix until firm dough. Divide mixture in half. Roll out one half and place in a greased pie flan.

Filling:

Peel and slice apples.
Mix together sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg.
Layer apples into prepared pie flan, sprinkling with cinnamon mixture between each layer.
Dot with margarine and cover with top crust
Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon

Bake at 200^oC for 15 minutes, then 150^oC until done

"Dolly" Travels to Northampton, WA

Well what a change from Perth this is for Dolly - a little town called

Northampton in the mid west of WA.

Upon arrival she was grabbed by a lanky teenage girl who was very disappointed to find out that she was only staying for a couple of days & not forever.

Next on the must do list was a visit to the sewing room where we par took in some light reading & some fabric diving ohhh that was fun!!! Thankfully my nice bright red shoes made it easy for Tina (from The Sewing Fairy) to find me!!!

Then I spotted the ponies, WOW there were so many to choose from that I just couldn't choose , so I jumped in & played with them all.

Then Neighsey Chain very obligingly took me for a small trip around the yard. That was fun!. While we were there I spotted the sheep & just had to go say hello.

After a couple of fun days it was time to say goodbye to Northampton & head back to Perth where I will be busy packing for the next part of my journey.

Introducing Tracey from My Obsession Designs:

Tell us a little about yourself?

Hi, my name is Tracey and I am the person behind My Obsession Designs.

I am a SAHM mother to 3 beautiful children – 2 boys and 1 girl with another special bundle on the way. Before becoming a mother 4½ years ago I was a Production Manager for an electronics company.

After nearly 4 years of being a SAHM, I felt as though I needed a bit more of a challenge – something to keep my brain active. My Obsession Designs was born from a love of beautiful and colourful fabrics – I started making bright and colourful nappy bags, something a bit different from the run of the mill shop bought ones and this soon turned into nappy pouches – gift bags – tote bags – swimming back packs and the list continues to grow..

Other than sewing, what do you do?

For as long as I can remember I have been involved in craft. I pretty much grew up underneath my Mum’s sewing table – sewing buttons onto scraps of fabric and picking up the pins off the floor. Other than sewing I enjoy a bit of cross stitch, knitting and scrapbooking our families precious memories.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Initially the inspiration for My Obsession Designs was Unique, Colourful or Interesting bags that are Practical.

I have a nappy bag that was made for me when I had my first child and it is bright and colourful and I just love it!

One of my favourite products are my Green Gift Bags, which I love because of the environmental factor. The idea that you can re-use your gift wrapping over and over again really motivates me to do more. I am just one person doing something for my environment.

Since finding the lovely world of handmade on Facebook, many people I have met on-line inspire me everyday. Nat from Patooties Boutique and Jane from Lil Pip were two of the first pages that I stumbled across on Facebook and I was (and still am) in absolute awe of what they create.

Being part of The Sewing Sisterhood has introduced me to many other talented ladies who also inspire me everyday. I am truly honoured to be part of such a fabulous group of ladies who provide support for each other constantly.

What does sewing, crafting and handmade mean to you?

Sewing, Crafting and Handmade to me represents something made with love. I truly treasure handmade goodness – each item is unique, even if they are made from the same fabrics.

Who is your favourite fabric or pattern designer?

I love shopping for gorgeous fabrics for my creations. There are so many fabulous designers out there who create the most amazing fabrics. A couple of designers who stand out amongst my favourites are Michael Miller and Riley Blake. There is never a shortage of yummy fabrics to choose from!

Who has been your greatest influence?

Growing up under the sewing table – my Mum would have to be my greatest influence with my crafting.

Where would you like to be in five years?

In 5 years time, I will be just about ready to send my last child off to school…. By then I plan on being able to support my family from home. My Obsession Designs will have a team of employees dedicated to bringing you quality handmade items.

What handmade possession do you love most?

My most precious handmade possession is actually not a “sewn” item. Many years ago my Grandfather crafted me a Hope Chest made from timber. He has now passed away and this item sits in my home and reminds me of all the good times we had together out in his shed making things with timber.

With only weeks (or days) left until our house goes from 5 to 6 (eek!!), I am loving quick, easy, simple recipes! I certainly don't feel like standing in the kitchen for hours labouring (no pun intended) over dinner to end up with the sound of "I don't like this" in my ears....

This menu is one of those that does not receive that reception - and it's quick and easy to boot!

Chicken & Macaroni Bake

Ingredients:

2 Cups Macaroni

¼ cup Olive Oil

4 Chicken Breast Fillets

1 Medium Carrot, chopped

1 Medium Onion, chopped

3 Rashers Bacon, chopped

2 Medium Zucchini, chopped

440g Can Tomato Soup

1/3 Cup Sour Cream

Salt and Freshly ground pepper to taste

1½ Cups Grated Cheddar Cheese

Method:

Trim chicken of excess fat and sinew. Preheat oven to moderate 180^oC
Cook macaroni in large pan of rapidly boiling water with a little oil added until just tender.
Slice chicken breasts into cubes. Heat oil in heavy based pan. Cook chicken quickly over high heat until browned but not cooked through. Drain on paper towel
Cook onion, carrot & bacon on medium heat for 10 minutes. Add zucchini & soup. Bring to boil, simmer uncovered for 5 minutes. Remove from heat
Combine pasta, chicken, tomato mixture & sour cream. Spread into shallow dish, top with cheese. Bake for 20 minutes until golden.

The Sewing Sisterhood Scrappy Doll Journey begins!

In the beginning ...

there was the idea of sending a piece of “Old People Golfing” fabric around to various members of TSS (The Sewing Sisterhood) and challenging them to use it to make something for sale, with the highest sale price the winner of something (read something as more Old People Golfing fabric!!). I wasn’t particularly surprised when this idea wasn’t warmly received (though I must admit I was slightly disappointed)! However, my next idea of creating a “Scrappy Softie” from donated pieces of fabric and then sending the softie around Australia on a ‘journey’, was very popular with the Sisterhood! Flooding into my mailbox here in Perth was an eclectic range of fabric pieces from all over Australia, all for the purpose of making a softie for charity and so the project commenced.

Who said fabrics on dollies had to coordinate and compliment!?

After a poll within the group we decided to use Sarah Hanson’s Dolls & Daydreams “Big Doll” pattern as our softie and what a great choice it was! Big Doll is seriously BIG and the size and design of the doll was PERFECT for using large scraps pieced together.

Being created is just the start!

After being born here at Little Sew & Sews headquarter in Perth, Western Australia, “Dolly” (who is yet to be officially named) has been safely posted off to her first destination – Northampton (north of Geraldton), Western Australia to Tina from The Sewing Fairy. I can’t wait to see what adventure she has with Tina!

After her country WA adventure “Dolly” will be making her way back to me for a trip on a plane to Melbourne and who knows – maybe a nice hostie will let her go into the cockpit for a browse?

The Sewing Sisterhood is waiting to hear back from a charity to see if they are interested in receiving all proceeds from “Dolly’s” auction at the end of her journey – more details to come as her adventure continues.

Menu Monday: Baked Apples

Wow, what a busy weekend I’ve had!! 2 days at The Mummy Tree Markets at Sanctuary Cove. Now it’s time to get myself all organized. Less than 7 weeks until our baby arrives and still have much to organize here!

Which got me thinking…. How do you organize your favourite recipes? I have a little A5 folder for all my well loved recipes. I have made up some “stationery” on my computer. When I find a recipe that like to use over and over again, rather than trying to remember which book or magazine it came from, I type it up on my stationery, print it out and put it in my folder. I would love to hear how your sort through your fav’s at home!

Todays recipe comes from Jane at Lil Pip. Following last weeks winter warmer, we have another – but this time a scrumptious dessert.

Baked Apples

Core apple

Stuff with either a mixture of sultanas and cinnamon or as an alternative, dried fruit and cinnamon (try dried apricot, dried dates and dried prunes all chopped up).

Place in a small baking dish. Put a small knob of butter or margarine on top (about a good teaspoon).

Bake in a moderate oven for 30-40 minutes. Serve hot with your choice of custard, ice cream or cream.

Menu Monday (on Tuesday)

The long weekend interupted my schedule somewhat and I didn't realise it was actually Monday until quite late last night (oops!) So Menu Monday has been moved to Tuesday for this week!

I don't know what it's been like in your neck of the woods, but the past week in Brisbane has been quite cold and dismal, which has made me think of some of those yummy meals that really are comfort food!!

One that I especially love is Pea and Ham soup (well mine actually is more like Pea and Ham Stew...) It smells absolutely delish as it is cooking away on the stove or slow cooker and goes perfectly with some fresh bread.... yum.....

Pea and Ham Soup

Ingredients:

1 Ham Hock

3 onions, diced

3 carrots, diced

6 gloves garlic

3 celery stalks, cut

3 tomatoes, chopped

Thyme

½ cup barley

2½ cups green split peas

2½ - 3L water

Method:

Place ham hock in a pot and cover with water. Bring to boil. Remove from water and discard the water.
Stir onions, carrots, garlic and celery in olive oil until golden brown.
Add tomatoes, thyme, barley and green split peas. Place ham hock on top and cover with water.
Simmer for approx 2½ hours. Add more water if necessary.

I like to cook mine in the slow cooker and just let it simmer all day long. If you want it to be more "soupy", take it off earlier or if you are like me and like it to be a bit more like a stew, let it cook for longer....

I think I better run off to the shops to buy a ham hock!

Menu Monday: "Nanna's Lemon Meringue Pie"

Wow, how is it that Monday is almost over.... I had full intentions of getting todays scrumptious recipe up by 9am, but here we are at the other end of the day already!!

Given that we are now officially in winter, there will be a few "winter warmer" recipes making their appearance here over the next few weeks. Todays recipe comes from Bec at Baby Chilli. I will certainly be trying this one out in the following weeks!

Nanna's Lemon Meringue Pie

Base:
180g of plain crushed biscuits - I add one packet around 250g (gota love a great base) with 90g of melted butter - make it around 120-150ml if adding a whole packet press firmly into a 23cm pie dish and chill

Filling:
1 can condensed milk,
1/2 cup lemon juice (I add 3/4 cup to make it extra tangy)
3 lightly beaten egg yolks (save the whites) (I add 5 eggs as I add more lemon juice)

mix together well and then pour over the chilled base

Meringue top:
beat the egg whites until they are stiff gradually adding 1/2 cup castor sugar (add 3/4 cup if using 5 egg whites)

spoon or pipe on top of the lemon filling. I spoon it on and then use a fork to make the spikes.

bake in a moderate oven for 15 minutes. If I have time I cook at 150 degrees fan forced for over 30 minutes to allow the meringue to brown nicely. how devine does that smell!! hmm might make it now :) You can serve it hot or cold but let it sit for about 10 minutes first after taking out of the oven as it will be runny otherwise.
